MEPs: The Day Will Come When Belarusians Will Celebrate This Holiday At Home

The Day of Will is a living testament to Belarus' quest for freedom.
Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament David McAllister, head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Belarus Małgorzata Gosiewska and her deputies Tomas Tobé and Michał Kobosko issued a joint statement on the occasion of the Day of Will. The communiqué was published on the website of the European Parliament (translated by Charter97.org)
The statement, signed by a number of MEPs, notes that the anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People's Republic in 1918 is not only a historical date, but also a symbol of the continuous struggle for statehood, dignity and the right to independently determine the future of the country.
"The Day of Will is a living testimony to the aspiration of Belarusians to freedom, which has survived decades of pressure and has not lost its strength," reads the statement.
The European Union emphasized that today this day has gained special significance against the background of the ongoing repression in the country after the presidential elections in 2020. According to European politicians, hundreds of people remain imprisoned for political reasons, while civil society and independent media are under constant pressure.
The statement separately notes the importance of preserving the Belarusian language, culture and national symbols, which are called "the basis of identity and a form of peaceful resistance."
The European Parliament also expressed concern about the growing dependence of Belarus on Russia amid the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that the issue of the country's sovereignty is becoming more and more urgent.
