Earlier, Tehran announced the complete closure of the strait.
Container ships CSCL Indian Ocean and CSCL Arctic Ocean, owned by Chinese state-owned Cosco Shipping, have turned around before entering the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing MarineTraffic data and information from the ships' crews.
The owners of the container ships say that only ships delivering everyday goods, cars, clothing and pharmaceutical products to Iran are allowed through the strait.
Tehran earlier allowed four grain ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz on their way to the Persian Gulf after waiting nearly three weeks in the Gulf of Oman.
These ships unloaded at Iran's Bandar-Imam-Khomeini port, where about three-quarters of the cargo handled is imported grain, mostly from Russia and South America.
