Trump wants to move nearly half a ton of uranium out of the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a risky military operation to remove uranium from Iran.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing knowledgeable sources. We are talking about nearly 450 kilograms of uranium.
According to the publication, such a mission would be difficult and dangerous, and would likely require the presence of U.S. troops on Iranian territory for several days or longer.
Officials note that Trump has not yet made a final decision on issuing a corresponding order and is carefully weighing the risks for the U.S. military. That said, the president remains open to the idea because it could help achieve his main goal of preventing Iran from building nuclear weapons.
A WSJ source familiar with Trump's position told the WSJ that the president has urged his advisers to persuade Tehran to hand over uranium voluntarily, seeing it as a condition for ending hostilities. In communications with political allies, Trump has made it clear that Iran will not be able to keep the material and has discussed the possibility of removing it by force if the country refuses to hand over uranium at the negotiating table.
It is noted that until June 2025, when Israel and the US launched a series of airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, the country was believed to have more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
