Rubio Names U.S. Goals In Iran

The U.S. Secretary of State took "weeks" to achieve them.

The U.S. goals for the military operation against Iran were announced immediately and have not changed since then: to defeat Iran's air and sea forces, destroy the country's missile and drone production, and significantly reduce the number of missile launchers, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told ABC television.

"All of those goals are on or ahead of schedule, and we will be able to achieve them within a few weeks," the U.S. secretary of state said.

In the course of the interview, Rubio named the U.S. goals twice. At the end, he reiterated what he said at the beginning, explaining that Washington is clear about its objectives.

"I'm going to repeat them now because I hear a lot of talk about how we supposedly don't have clear objectives. Here they are, you can write them down. One, the destruction of their air force. Two, the destruction of their navy. Three, drastically reducing their missile capability, their launchers. And the fourth is the destruction of their factories so that they cannot produce new missiles and new drones to threaten us in the future," he emphasized.

Rubio noted that all these goals serve to prevent Iran from "hiding" behind military force and "getting nuclear weapons."

"We are on track and in some areas we are even ahead of schedule and will achieve these goals in a matter of weeks, not months," the secretary of state assured.

When asked about the ongoing negotiations with Iran, Rubio said that President Donald Trump has not abandoned attempts to resolve the conflict diplomatically. The secretary of state did not specify which of the Islamic Republic's authorities the U.S. leader was negotiating with, but said there was a rift in Iranian society.

"There are people there who are privately saying the right things. Naturally, they don't bring their views into the public arena. But we need them to be the ones who end up in power," Rubio said.
