Syrsky Revealed Details Of A Large-scale Reform In The Ukrainian Army

The second phase is now underway.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Alexander Syrsky said that the Ukrainian army is now in the second stage of corps reform. The main purpose of the changes is to unload the military management system and increase its efficiency in war conditions.

At the same time, the third and final stage of the reform is planned to begin after the end of hostilities. He said this in an interview with ICTV.

According to Syrsky, the need for reform arose due to the lack of professional operational-level management bodies amid the rapid growth of the army. Previously, the troops were led by temporary operational and tactical groups, whose commanders were appointed only for a few months, which negatively affected the quality of management.

"This significantly affected the quality of management: they didn't know their troops, they didn't feel responsible for the units they commanded," he said.

In addition, the number of control bodies did not correspond to the number of combat brigades, which have grown significantly due to the strengthening of the Russian army - from 140,000 at the beginning of the aggression to more than 700,000 now. As a result, the system was overloaded.

The first stage of the reform was the creation of the corps directorate. A total of 16 corps were formed, of which 13 are in the AFU, and two more are in the National Guard.

Now the second stage is underway, providing for the formation of full-fledged corps sets. They include battalions and regiments of unmanned systems, electronic warfare units, artillery brigades, anti-aircraft missile divisions and engineering units. Some of them, in particular the First Corps of the National Guard and the Third Army Corps, are already fully manned.

At the same time, as the commander-in-chief noted, during active combat operations it is impossible to assign all brigades to specific corps. Troops are constantly rotating, maneuvering and can be quickly moved to different groupings.

Syrsky stressed that this process is dynamic: territorial defense units, marines and amphibious assault troops can operate within the corps. The management system is constantly changing in accordance with the situation at the front.

The third stage of the reform will be the final stage and will begin after the end of hostilities. At that time, the final reformatting of the structure will take place, and the subordination of brigades will be determined depending on the places of permanent deployment of corps.
