The Turkish military shot down an Iranian ballistic missile. It was flying towards Turkish airspace.
The Turkish Defense Ministry's press service reports this.
"A ballistic missile fired from Iran crossed the airspace of Iraq and Syria and was detected while moving towards Turkish airspace. It was neutralized in time by NATO air and missile defense elements in the Eastern Mediterranean," the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
It is noted that the missile fragment that fell in the Dertiol district of Hatay province belongs to the air defense system, which intercepted the threat in the air. No one was injured in the incident.
"We warn all sides to refrain from actions that will further spread the conflict in the region. In this context, we will continue to consult with NATO and other allies," the country's defense ministry added.
Cyprus Strikes
It is possible that the Iranian missile, which passed over Iraq and Syria and was approaching Turkey, was flying towards Cyprus.
In the past few days, Iran has attacked a British military base in Cyprus with drones at least twice, with explosions reported near the runway.
With the situation escalating, Greece has sent two warships to Cyprus to protect the island. It is also reported to have dispatched a pair of F-16 fighter jets.
It was also reported on March 1 that Iran fired two ballistic missiles in the direction of Cyprus, where British military bases are located. Both missiles were intercepted on approach to the island.
