Swedish Coast Guard spokesman Mattias Lindholm noted that the relevant authorities are investigating the vessel.

"I don't want to make assumptions about what decisions we will make. Right now we are still at sea, just south of Trelleborg," Lindholm added.

Swedish Civil Defense Minister Karl-Oskar Bolin said it is likely the vessel, whose ownership is in great question, lacks insurance. The vessel reportedly changed its flag from Russian to Guinean back this summer.

Sweden also said the investigation should determine whether the vessel meets the technical requirements for navigation in the northern European country's territorial waters.
