US President Donald Trump has issued a harsh statement on Iran, assessing its position in the current geopolitical standoff as extremely weak.

In a released statement, Trump said he believes Iranian authorities "do not realize that they have no trump cards" except for "short-term extortion of money from the entire world using international waterways."

He also emphasized that, in his assessment, the only factor that currently allows Iran to maintain its position is the ability to negotiate.

"The only reason they are alive today is so they can negotiate," Donald Trump said.
