The plan encompassed more than just military measures.
The UK is developing an updated version of a large-scale plan to prepare the country for possible martial law. This was announced by the head of the country's armed forces Richard Knighton in a commentary for Sky News.
The new strategy, he said, involves a different approach to state resilience - taking into account the experience of the Cold War, but adapted to modern conditions, society and infrastructure.
The original similar planning system was created back during World War I. It was a classified set of documents that were regularly updated and practiced. Thanks to this, Great Britain was considered one of the most prepared countries for crises.
The plan covered not only military measures, but also the civil sphere: it provided for the mobilization of the population and industry, the closure of schools, the repurposing of hospitals, the introduction of food rationing, as well as measures to preserve national values.
But by the early 2000s, this system was phased out due to high costs.
Answering a question about the actual return to previous approaches, Knighton noted that it is indeed a question of reviving such mechanisms. The updated plan will focus on protecting critical infrastructure - including power plants and water systems - from both natural disasters and possible military threats.
He also stressed that it is important for citizens to realize that the period of relative stability of recent decades is coming to an end. Therefore, it is necessary to raise public awareness of the risks and the role everyone can play in ensuring the country's sustainability and supporting the army.
Western officials are increasingly warning of a potential threat from Russia. In particular, the deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Pavel Palisa said that such fears have grounds, but the timing and format of possible actions will depend on Russia's resources and the development of the situation in Ukraine.
