Vance: U.S. And Iran Have Not Reached A Deal

The discussion lasted 22 hours.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that following the talks with Iran in Pakistan, the parties still have not reached an agreement to end the war. In particular, Tehran is not yet ready to give up its nuclear program.

This is reported by CNN.

In a press conference in Islamabad, Vance said that the US has been engaged in the negotiation process for 22 hours and has held a number of meaningful discussions. That's precisely the good news. But there is bad news.

"The bad news is that we haven't reached an agreement. And I think it's bad news for Iran much more than it is for the United States. So we go back to the United States without having reached an agreement," the official said.

He added that the U.S. does not yet see Iran's willingness to give up the possibility of developing nuclear weapons, and that is a stumbling block in the talks.

"The question is, do we see a fundamental commitment by the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons, not just now, not just in two years, but in the long term? We don't see that yet, but hopefully we will," Vance said.

The vice president emphasized that Iranian officials have refused to accept the terms of the deal, which he said were "quite flexible."

"We're leaving here with a very simple proposal, a way of reaching an understanding that is our final and best option. We'll see if the Iranians accept it," he reported.

Vance also revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump told the American delegation to come to the talks in good faith and make every effort to make a deal. They did so, he said, but no progress was made.

The vice president added that he was in constant communication with Trump during the trilateral talks with Iran in Pakistan and also kept in touch with other administration officials.

"Obviously, we were in constant communication with the president. I don't know how many times we talked to him, six times, twelve times in the last 21 hours," he told reporters.

Additionally, before Vance's conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai outlined what topics were discussed in the Iran-US talks.

He said that among the main topics were the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear program, military reparations, lifting sanctions and a complete end to the war against Iran and the region.
