Because of Iran and Venezuela.

US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Pope Leo XIV on his social network Truth Social, calling him "weak on crime" and "terrible on foreign policy."

In a lengthy post published on the night of April 13, Trump accused the pope of several points:

Weak on crime - Trump said the pope "doesn't mention the fear" the Catholic Church experienced during COVID-19, when "priests, pastors and everyone else" were "arrested for holding services, even 10 to 20 feet away.

Iran's Nuclear Program - "I don't want a Pope who thinks Iran may have nuclear weapons," Trump wrote.

The U.S. president condemned the Pope's stance on the U.S. attack on Venezuela, calling the country a "source of massive drug shipments" and "empty prisons."

Trump praised Pope Leo's brother Luis, noting, "I like him much better because Luis is a real MAGA."

Leo XIV (born in the United States) was elected Pope in May 2025 after the death of Francis.
