The French president hinted that his American counterpart talks too much.
French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a sharp defense of NATO values, warning that US President Donald Trump's regular statements questioning Washington's commitment to the Alliance "undermine its foundations." He also called on world leaders to "be serious" in their statements.
This was reported by The Guardian.
"I am convinced that organizations and alliances such as NATO are largely held together by what is not spoken aloud - the trust that underpins them. This is especially important in the military and strategic sphere. When commitments are questioned on a daily basis, the very essence of the alliance is eroded," Macron emphasized.
He said that the signatory countries of the North Atlantic Treaty have already made their choice by joining the Alliance and are not obliged to comment on every event in the world - it is important just to be there and support partners in times of need.
"We need to be consistent and serious. You can't say one thing today and the opposite tomorrow. There are too many superfluous words now," the French leader said.
Macron also said that the idea of a military operation to force the opening of the Strait of Hormuz looks unrealistic and called for a return to diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
