Unexpected alternative.
Saudi Arabia has launched a cargo railroad over 1,700 kilometers long as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. It runs from the port of Abdulaziz in the Persian Gulf to the Jordanian border, from where goods will be transported by road to the Red Sea, writes Railway Gazette International.
The trains, each capable of carrying more than 400 containers, will run in both directions - allowing the country to both continue exporting its products to world markets and import foreign goods.
The railroad will be twice as efficient as a conventional road route. In addition, it will not create additional traffic on the country's roads.
At the same time in Jordan, goods will continue their journey by road, because the country's railroads are not suitable for the transportation of containerized goods.
