It has become known who will replace him.

Tim Cook will step down as Apple's CEO and move into the role of executive chairman. He will be succeeded by John Ternus, now senior vice president of hardware engineering. The company announced the move on the evening of April 20.

Apple's statement noted that the decision, unanimously supported by the board of directors, was the result of a long-term and carefully considered succession plan. Ternus will officially take over as CEO on Sept. 1.

Cook called being at the helm of the company "the greatest privilege" and thanked the team for working together on products that improve users' lives.

Cook has been with Apple since 1998 and took over the company in 2011 after the departure of Steve Jobs. In more than 14 years under his leadership, Apple's market capitalization grew from about $350 billion to $4 trillion and revenue from $108 billion to $416 billion in its most recent fiscal year. Under him, the company introduced products like Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro, and developed services like iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV and Apple Music. Tim Cook is now 65 years old.
