The First Western Ship Was Able To Break Through The Strait Of Hormuz Since The Outbreak Of War In Iran

  • 3.04.2026, 20:58

It was the French container ship Kribi.

The container ship Kribi, owned by French company CMA CGM, has left the Strait of Hormuz.

This is believed to be the first time a Western European-linked vessel has been able to pass through a strait effectively blocked by Iran since the war began, writes "Deutsche Welle" citing Bloomberg.

According to ship tracking data, a Malta-flagged container ship left the port of Gangut near Dubai and headed toward Iran. The vessel kept close to the Iranian coast, passing the channel between the islands of Qeshm and Larak, and openly broadcast its route. On the morning of April 3, the crew reported that it was off the coast of Muscat, which is already on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz. Two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to Bloomberg that the container ship had crossed the strait.

It also became known on April 3 that a Japanese tanker for the transportation of liquefied natural gas was able to leave the Strait of Hormuz - for the first time since the beginning of the blockade of this most important shipping route by Iran. The information was confirmed to Reuters by the co-owner of the vessel - the company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. When exactly the tanker crossed the strait and whether this required any negotiations, the company did not specify.

Since the beginning of the war between the United States and Israel against Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, through which passes about 20% of the world's transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas, is actually blocked by the Iranian army. In late March, it became known that Iran allowed ships from Russia, China, India, Iraq and Pakistan to pass through the strait.

The United States and Israel have been conducting airstrikes on Iran since February 28, as a result of which Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a number of high-ranking officials and security forces were killed.
