To capture uranium reserves.
US President Donald Trump will on Thursday hear a report from the head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), Brad Cooper, with a plan for possible new operations against Iran, Axios reported, citing unnamed sources (translated by The Moscow Times).
The US military command has thought through a short and powerful series of bombardments of IRI territory, including, probably, infrastructure facilities, they said. Another plan expected to be presented to Trump involves taking control of part of the Strait of Hormuz to resume commercial shipping. As Axios notes, such an operation may require the involvement of ground troops.
Washington hopes in this way to get Tehran to be more accommodating in negotiations on the nuclear program, the publication writes. In addition, the briefing may consider the option of seizing stocks of highly enriched uranium by special forces.
In the meantime, Washington called on other countries to form an international coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a State Department memo seen by Reuters.
