Catholics, Greek Catholics And Protestants In Belarus Celebrate Easter
- 5.04.2026, 8:06
Most Christian churches today celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ.
All Catholic churches and Protestant houses of worship in Belarus held festive services.
Easter is the most awaited bright day for many Christians. Easter symbolizes the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of people and for the sake of saving the human race from terrible troubles.
Easter is one of the holidays with a floating date, as the holiday is calculated according to the lunar-solar calendar and is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first spring full moon. In addition, due to the difference in calendars, Catholics (Gregorian calendar) and Orthodox (Julian calendar) celebrate Easter with a certain difference.
The day before Archbishop-Emmeritus Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz addressed the clergy and believers in Belarus with strong words. The honorable hierarch and moral authority of Belarusian Catholics said that the Easter holiday puts us all before a choice and the grace of God cannot be there where there is compromise with sin and evil.
Specialities of worship
On Easter night in front of the church, a Catholic priest makes a fire, from which he lights a very large candle, which is called Paschal. The same tradition characterizes the Easter rite in Anglican and Lutheran churches. From the Paschal, the parishioners light their candles and take the lighted candle home. Notably, after Easter, Paschal is lit at every service until Pentecost (the descent of the Holy Spirit).

Painted Eggs
Painted eggs are a symbol of Easter in all nations practicing Christianity. According to legend, Mary Magdalene, after learning about the resurrection of Christ, went to tell everyone about the miracle, her words reached the ears of the emperor, and when Mary Magdalene appeared before him at his request, he laughed, saying that just as the white eggs will never become red, so the dead will not become alive. The egg in his hand immediately turned red. Therefore, the mandatory attribute of the holiday are eggs-red eggs.
Chocolate eggs and the Easter Bunny
Since recently, Catholics on Easter is customary to give children gifts, or rather a basket with chocolate eggs wrapped in colored foil. It is placed at the headboard of the bed or hidden in a secluded place, and the search for the gift turns into a fun - a fun egg hunt begins. Of course, it is not the parents who give it, but the Easter bunny.
Easter bread
On Catholic Easter, the main dish on the table is Easter bread. Each nation has its own, but all of them are very beautiful, festive and delicious. The French have a kind of brioche, the Poles have Easter babka, the Czechs have Mazanec, the Greeks have tsoureki, the British have simnel, the Spanish have Mona de Pascua, the Italians have panettone or colomba, and the Germans have gugelhupf.
