The US and Hungary have also concluded agreements in the field of nuclear energy. The countries will cooperate on small modular reactors. Under the agreement, Hungary could build up to 10 such reactors at a potential cost of $20 billion. The two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding to buy nuclear fuel for the Paks-1 nuclear power plant from the U.S. company Westinghouse for the entire period of its operation. The nuclear power plant was built by Russian specialists, and fuel for it was supplied by a Rosatom structure.
Hungary has started negotiations with the US company Westinghouse on fuel supplies to Paks-1 in November 2025. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto noted that Hungary is not going to give up fuel supplied by Rosatom. Purchases of US fuel will help the country strengthen its energy sovereignty in the face of EU sanctions against the Russian state corporation.
