Chisinau is in the final stage of withdrawal from the organization.

Moldovan President Maya Sandu has signed decrees denouncing the fundamental agreements of the Commonwealth of Independent States, writes Newsmaker.

The relevant laws came into force on April 8 after publication in the Official Monitor, marking the final stage of withdrawal from the organization.

The government stresses that the move is a logical continuation of the course of European integration. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry said that the fundamental principles of the CIS are no longer respected.

According to CIS rules, a member state has the right to withdraw from the commonwealth, and it informs about such intention in writing 12 months before withdrawal.

Since 2023, the Moldovan authorities have launched a large-scale revision of dozens of agreements signed within the CIS, gradually tearing up those that contradict national interests or prevent the country's accession to the EU.

The decision to withdraw was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by parliament in the second reading on April 2.

On March 11, the Moldovan government approved the denunciation of the fundamental documents of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
