"They Wipe Their Feet, Throw Papers In The Garbage Cans": Russian Woman Shocked By Belarus

  • 1.05.2026, 7:51

There were real battles in the comments.

Anastasia Mazurskaya, an English teacher from Russia, came to Belarus and shared her observation about the difference between locals and Russians in Threads. Among the things that impressed the woman were the "wrong" accent and the "strange" use of a toilet lid. Commenters could not pass by - real battles broke out under the post, writes "Zerkalo".

Anastasia said she has been in Belarus for three weeks and during this time she has noticed "several differences".

"Belarusians often misplace accents (they say vodU, rodIila, spinU). Many of those I asked don't know about cottage cheese Easter. They drink tap water and think it's normal. It's strange, but for some reason they put down the toilet lid everywhere (this is such a great observation)," she wrote.

Also, according to the woman, she heard from Belarusians that "russian people (Russians. - Editor's note) are very angry." At the end, Anastasia asked the audience: "How do you think Belarusians differ from Russian people?"

The post of the Russian woman was viewed 170 thousand times. There are also a lot of comments under it. And if the original post was liked by less than 200 people, the replies to the Russian woman (often disapproving) garnered thousands of reactions.

Some people responded on the matter - commenting on the content of the woman's post. For example, some people explained to Anastasia what was wrong with her observations and told about other differences.

"1. This is due to the native Belarusian language, so accents may be different. 2. Curd Easter is simply not common. 3. It is possible to drink tap water here. 4. The lid protects from the spread of urine and feces in the room".

"Belarusians are just different. Because we are another country and another nation. And there are really a lot of differences."

"They wipe their feet, throw papers in the trash cans, cross the street on green. There's a lot of differences. The world is beautiful in its diversity."

"Look, Belarus has its own language. And these wrong accents, as it seems to you, are its influence. Secondly, Russian in Belarus is different from Russian. Just as English in New Zealand, Britain and America is not identical. And this is normal. And thirdly, Russian in Russia can be different in every region. There is such a concept - regionalism. And fourthly, it is somehow impolite to write such a thing in public. It is not surprising that Belarusians are dissatisfied with the guests from the Russian Federation".

"Well, we have artesian water all over Minsk, why not drink it?"

Anastasia's amazement at the functionality of the toilet lid caught people's attention separately.

"The insight that the toilet lid, as it turns out, can be used, already says that the trip was not in vain".

"Is the toilet lid a decorative element in Russia?"

The part of comments (and they turned out to be the most popular) is an emotional reaction to similar posts of tourists from the neighboring country.

"Nastenka, you've already stayed in Belarus. It's time to know your honor: to leave for the swamps. There you don't need to lower the toilet lid because most people don't have toilets in their homes, and you can drink booze instead of water. And this... don't come to us anymore and tell your neighbors not to come".

"We do not call ourselves Russian people, we call them 'Hai Chort u khatu leze, aby ne maskal', and I think it's beautiful".

"We do not seize other people's lands and do not kill our neighbors: I think this is our main difference. And one more thing: don't tell us where to put the accent, or you will think that we are infringing on the rights of Russian speakers, and you will come to liberate them...".
