The decision is against the trade agreement.
US President Donald Trump has announced that he will raise duties on cars from the European Union to 25% in defiance of a trade agreement reached last summer.
He announced this in his Truth Social.
The US president argued his decision on the grounds that the EU is allegedly not honoring the agreement reached.
He said the duties will take effect next week.
"I am pleased to announce that, given that the European Union is not honoring our trade agreement, which we have fully negotiated, next week I will raise the duties levied by the European Union on cars and trucks imported into the United States. The duty will be raised to 25%," Trump wrote.
The previous tariff rate agreed to by Brussels and Washington in the trade agreement was 15%.
Reminder, it is about the framework trade agreement between the EU and the US, concluded in the Scottish town of Turnbury on July 27, 2025, which fixed duties on European imports to the US at 15%.
The European Parliament on March 26 adopted two proposals on tariffs under the EU-US framework trade agreement.
Euro MPs favored strengthening the "safeguard" clause, which would allow all or part of preferences to be suspended if the U.S. imposes additional tariffs above the agreed 15% threshold or any new duties on European goods.
The European Parliament also added a provision that new tariffs would only take effect if the U.S. complies with its commitments.
