A utility collapse has been going on in the city for a week and a half now.

A communal collapse has been going on for a week and a half in the Russian city of Engels in the Saratov region: after the main collector broke down, the city is flooded with sewage and fecal matter, "Dialog.UA" reports.

Almost 200,000 people were left without water for the May holidays. The city has introduced a state of emergency. The accident occurred on April 29 on Mendeleeva Street. First, the authorities turned off the water in part of the city, but the situation was worsened by heavy rains. After that, courtyards and first floors of houses began to flood with dirty water.

It is noteworthy that the Engels-2 airbase in the Saratov region is the most important strategic facility in Russia and one of the largest bomber bases. It is from here that the planes that launch cruise missiles at Ukraine take off.

Without water

Residents were advised to drink only boiled or bottled water. Utility workers warned that while there is no pressure, waste should not be dumped into toilets and sinks: without water, it will accumulate in the pipes and may cause new local clogs.

The authorities say they have organized the delivery of drinking and technical water, and work on cleaning the collector and pumping water is being carried out around the clock. The timing of the full completion of the work remains unclear.

Military rear

Engels is known as an airbase from where Russian strategic aircraft participate in strikes on Ukraine. Against the backdrop of the war, the city faced a basic communal collapse: the sewage system failed, water disappeared, and residents were held hostage to the deteriorating infrastructure.
