US Renews Sanctions On Oil From Russia

The exemption has not been extended.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has not renewed a temporary exemption to sanctions on Russian oil that had been in place amid the protracted Gulf War.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

The expiration of the exemption effectively ends a brief period during which the U.S. administration eased sanctions on Russian oil.

The Trump administration issued the first exemption in March and renewed it in April The waivers applied only to the portion of Russian oil that had already been loaded onto tankers.

The waivers have sparked controversy, especially among European allies who see the sanctions as necessary to deprive Russia of oil revenues and deprive Moscow of funding for the war in Ukraine.

But some countries, notably India and Indonesia, have asked the U.S. to extend the sanctions waivers because the war with Iran and the near-total closure of the Strait of Hormuz are depriving world markets of millions of barrels of oil every day.
