Kiev Will Be Able To Conclude An Agreement With Japan On The Transfer Of Defense Technologies

Ukraine's ambassador to Tokyo is preparing for substantive talks.

Japan's relaxation of arms export rules has opened new prospects for military cooperation with Ukraine. Kiev believes this could be an important step toward possible supplies of Japanese equipment and technology to counter Russian aggression, the Reuters news agency writes (translated by Charter97.org).

Ukraine's ambassador to Tokyo said that the changes in Japan's policy make it possible to start substantive discussions. While current restrictions still prohibit arms exports to conflict zones, they include exceptions related to Japan's national security. It is this possibility that the Ukrainian side is counting on.

Tokyo is increasingly viewing the situation in Ukraine through the prism of its own security, given China's growing military activity. The Japanese authorities have previously stated that the events in Eastern Europe may have direct consequences for Asia.

But there have been no official statements about the readiness to supply weapons to Ukraine. For this purpose, Kiev needs to conclude an agreement with Japan on the transfer of defense technologies - Tokyo already has such agreements with a number of countries.

In the short term, Ukraine hopes for financial support from Japan in the development of its own air defense system. This would reduce dependence on American Patriot systems, the shortage of which is becoming more and more tangible.

The possible participation of Japan in NATO programs to finance arms purchases for Ukraine is also being discussed. Such mechanisms have already attracted several countries outside the alliance.

In addition, Japanese companies can play an important role in supplying electronics and components for the production of drones, which are actively used on the front.

The Ukrainian side emphasizes that it is not only about receiving assistance, but also about mutually beneficial cooperation. The combination of Japanese technologies and Ukrainian combat experience can lead to the creation of new effective defense solutions.
