Norway To Join France's Nuclear Umbrella

Oslo is going for an agreement because of the threat from Russia.

Norway will join France's nuclear umbrella, the country's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has said, NRK reports.

The channel notes that Oslo will join nine other capitals in assessing how French nuclear weapons can contribute to security and deterrence in Europe.

The Norwegian prime minister indicated that the country is going for the agreement in part because of Russia's rearmament and fears of declining U.S. support.

"We are doing this in light of the security policy situation in Europe, including Russia's massive rearmament, including in the nuclear field, and the fact that it is waging a full-scale war against another European country," Støre told NTB news agency (quoted by Reuters).

At the same time, however, Støre noted that the agreement with France does not change Norway's position on nuclear weapons. "There should be no nuclear weapons on Norwegian soil in peacetime," he said.

Besides the nuclear umbrella, the agreement with Paris implies closer cooperation on hybrid warfare, space cooperation, maritime security, cyber security, support for Ukraine and defense-industrial cooperation.
