The U.S. Secretary of State called the situation on the island "a great misfortune."
Cuba is in "big trouble," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said. According to him, the country is run by "incompetent communists." Rubio said 70% of Cuba's economy is controlled by one conglomerate, GAESA.
"This company's money is not going to help the Cuban people, not one penny. So we're going to talk to them, we're going to work on it. We want something good for the Cuban people, and hopefully this will have a positive outcome for them," the US secretary of state said at a cabinet meeting (broadcast on the White House's YouTube channel).
Cuba faced fuel shortages in January after US President Donald Trump threatened countries with duties on oil shipments to the island. Cuban Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levi said the island's diesel and fuel oil reserves are completely depleted.
