Because of the oil treaty with Iran.
US President Donald Trump has threatened a military strike against Oman over attempts to gain control of the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. The American leader is demanding that the ally abandon plans to charge tolls for ships.
This is reported by The Guardian.
The White House chief made the threat during an informal conversation at a cabinet meeting. He was angered by information about secret talks between Oman and Tehran on Hormuz and Trump is demanding complete freedom of navigation.
"The Strait will be open to everybody," Trump said. "Nobody is going to monitor it. We're going to monitor it. We're going to monitor it. But nobody is going to control him. That's part of the negotiations that we're having."
Trump was blunt about the possibility of a major attack on Oman.
"Oman is going to behave just like everybody else. Otherwise we're going to have to nuke them. They understand that. They will be fine," the American president added.
Conflict in Washington: Republicans against the truce
The piece notes that because of the failed negotiations with Iran, Republican hawks are not happy. They have supported the war against Iran from the beginning and Operation Epic Fury is a matter of principle for them. They consider the possible 60-day cease-fire a defeat.
Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the possible truce a "disaster." He believes it would wipe out all of the Army's gains.
