What Romania's Defense Ministry is saying
The Romanian defense ministry confirmed that the drone that fell on a high-rise building in Galati was Russian.
"On the night of May 28-29, Russian Federation resumed drone attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania. One drone entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galati, after which it landed on the roof of an apartment building and the explosion caused a fire," the report said.
Two F-16 fighter jets supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter took off from the Fetesti airbase at 01:19 to intercept the drone. The pilots had authorization to engage the target.
After the drone was detected, the population of Tulcea, Galati and Breila counties was alerted via the Ro-Alert system.
"The situation is dynamic and we will provide official information and data as soon as they become available," the Romanian Defense Ministry noted:
It should be noted that the straight line distance from Reni to Romanian Galati is about 20 km.
South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson commented on the Russian drone attack on Romania.
"Russia attacked Romania aggressively and without any provocation. Families sleeping in their homes are being targeted by Putin's war criminal missiles and Iranian drones. This is not the first Russian attack on a NATO state. Containment is the only way to stop Russia's perverted actions. Russia understands only the language of force. The failed Soviet Empire is dead and must never return," the American politician wrote on social media X.
