The Russian Army Is One Step Away From The Collapse Of Barrel Artillery

  • 29.05.2026, 22:23

The occupiers are increasingly forced to send old Soviet howitzers to the front.

For the incomplete current month (as of May 28), the Ukrainian Defense Forces have destroyed/damaged 1,816 units of Russian barrel artillery. If another 60 systems are hit in three days, the figure will become a record for the entire time of the full-scale Russian invasion.

This statistic was brought to the attention of Alexander Kovalenko, a military and political observer for the Information Resistance group. On his page on Facebook, he noted that the invaders began losing more artillery during the start of the spring offensive campaign in 2026.

Additionally, the highest rate of enemy artillery hit - 1,875 units - was recorded in April 2026.

The disappointing statistics for the enemy indicate not only a decrease in the number, but also a deterioration in the quality of the artillery systems used by the Russians (they deconsolidate and send to combat zones mostly towed Soviet howitzers).

"Compensation of this category with new artillery systems is not only difficult, but practically non-existent," Kovalenko said.

He emphasized that the invaders are engaged precisely in re-conservation of Soviet stocks and repair of damaged equipment.

"It is worth noting here that towed artillery is quite difficult to 'destroy' and we are mainly talking about damaged artillery systems suitable for restoration. However, the qualitative problems with Russian artillery are obvious, and the lack of mass production of new products will lead to the inevitable exhaustion of both Soviet stocks (which are already almost completely depleted) and repair/restoration capabilities," the expert is convinced.

Kovalenko explained that in the realities of modern maneuver warfare, the howitzer, which must be transported by other equipment, "is more of a burden than a formidable means of defeat, and it is turning into an increasingly energy-consuming stumbling block - both for the troops and for the proi As for the deficit, you can already see the crisis. We just need to look deeper," the political-military observer summarized.
