To protect maritime traffic.

The Pentagon announced the launch of a new defense operation called "Project Liberty" in the area of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has deployed a maritime defense system.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a briefing.

"As a direct gift from the United States to the world, we have deployed a powerful red-white-white-and-blue dome over the Strait. U.S. destroyers are at anchor, supported by hundreds of fighter jets, helicopters, drones and surveillance aircraft, providing around-the-clock surveillance of peaceful commercial vessels, except of course Iranian vessels, which is why our ironclad blockade also remains in full force," the U.S. defense chief said.

He explained that the purpose of the operation is to ensure the safety of international commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Hegseth said the operation is defensive and temporary in nature and is aimed at protecting trade routes from possible threats.

He also emphasized that the US has no plans to enter Iran's territorial waters and has no intention to escalate the conflict. At the same time, the Pentagon accused Iran of trying to influence shipping in the region and create obstacles to international trade.

The ceasefire remains in force, but the situation is under constant US control, the senior official added.
