Newsweek Described A Possible Scenario Of Chaos In Russia

  • 7.05.2026, 10:11

The concentration of power around one man has led to the weakening of institutions.

In the event of Putin's sudden death or departure from power, the end of the war would not necessarily accelerate - on the contrary, it could create additional risks and instability. This is according to an analytical article in Newsweek.

The publication notes that Russia has recently increased security measures around the president. According to European intelligence agencies, Putin is increasingly staying in secure hideouts, fearing possible assassination attempts or coup attempts. There are also reports of increased checks in his entourage, reducing the circle of trusted people and limiting contacts and movements.

With this background, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the Russian leadership is concerned about possible drone attacks during the May 9 parade in Moscow. At the same time, as the piece emphasizes, the main threats to Russia's political system may come not from outside, but from within.

The authors of the publication describe that over the years Putin has built a system in which he plays the role of a key arbiter and decision-making center. According to them, he has built a model of governance where various elite groups compete for his support, which determines access to resources and influence.

The piece also says that the concentration of power around one person has led to the weakening of institutions, and the sudden disappearance of a center like Putin could cause a serious systemic crisis within the country.
