Moldovan Parliament Refused To Work In Russian Language

Chisinau has taken a steady course towards European integration.

The Moldovan parliament has approved a draft code on the organization and activity of the legislative body, which abolishes the use of the Russian language in legislative work. As reported by Unimedia, the document, submitted by deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PDS), establishes Romanian as the only working language.

"The working language of the parliament is Romanian. Normative acts are drafted and adopted in Romanian, with their translation into other languages if necessary," the document itself says. The profile commission specified that the initiative is meant to fulfill the European Commission's recommendations set out in the 2023-2025 enlargement reports.

"At the moment, we have a legal obligation to exclude from the legislative procedure, and not only from it, the circulation of documents and their mandatory translation into Russian... All communication and the entire legislative process should be carried out in Romanian," explained PDS MP Igor Talmasan.

Kishinev has set a steady course towards European integration after applying for EU membership in 2022. In early April, the Moldovan parliament passed in the second and final reading laws denouncing the Agreement on the Creation of the CIS and the Charter of the Commonwealth. In 2024, the country held a referendum on joining the European Union, where the majority of citizens voted in favor. At the same time, Maya Sandu was re-elected for a second presidential term, beating the pro-Russian candidate Alexander Stoianoglo.

In September 2025, the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party retained its constitutional majority in parliamentary elections. The Moldovan authorities, however, have repeatedly claimed attempts by Moscow to interfere in the electoral processes.
