To bring the head of the Kremlin back to the negotiating table.

US President Donald Trump during a May summit in Beijing allegedly asked Chinese President Si Jinping to help end the war in Ukraine. This was reported by the South China Morning Post newspaper, citing sources, but the publication was later removed.

According to the publication's interlocutors, Trump told Xi that the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia was at an impasse and urged the Chinese leader to use his influence to bring Vladimir Putin back to talks with Vladimir Zelensky.

Sources said the move signaled Washington's desire to involve Beijing in efforts to resolve the conflict. They said that since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has made ending the war one of his administration's key foreign policy objectives.

The publication also noted that talks between Kiev and Moscow had effectively stalled after a meeting in Istanbul in the summer of 2025 that ended without a ceasefire agreement. After that, Trump allegedly began more actively urging the Ukrainian leadership to seek a compromise solution with Russia.
