The first details of the "Memorandum of Understanding" have emerged.
.
The United States and Iran have agreed on the text of a preliminary agreement. It provides, in particular, for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire and the easing of sanctions against Tehran.
This was reported by Axios.
According to the publication, the document, which may be signed in the coming days, is a “Memorandum of Understanding.”
The agreement provides for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the easing of sanctions against Iran, and the extension of the ceasefire for 60 days, including in Lebanon.
According to the memorandum, Iran commits to never developing nuclear weapons and to resolving the issue of its stockpiles of enriched uranium. In return, the U.S. will begin a phased easing of sanctions, which will depend on Tehran’s compliance with the terms of the agreement.
According to Axios, U.S. President Donald Trump agreed that one possible solution to the problem could be the storage of Iran’s highly enriched uranium within the country under the supervision of UN inspectors.
The document also provides for the restoration of pre-war shipping volumes through the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days of signing and the lifting of the U.S. blockade.
At the same time, the publication notes that Trump’s announcement of the deal’s conclusion came as a surprise to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to an American source, Netanyahu had been kept in the dark in recent days and had been reaching out to allies close to the Trump administration in an attempt to obtain information.
A diplomat from one of the mediating countries told Axios that the U.S. and Iran have agreed on the text of the deal, but it still requires final approval.
According to sources, the document has already received high-level approval in Tehran but has likely not yet been approved by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mohtaba Khamenei.
If the agreement is signed, it may be called the “Islamabad Agreement.”
According to Axios, yesterday, June 11, four U.S. Air Force C-17 military transport planes flew to Europe, carrying equipment for a possible trip by Vice President J.D. Vance to the signing ceremony in Geneva in the coming days.
