Iran has announced the dates of the funeral for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died in late February as a result of strikes by the U.S. and Israel. Mourning ceremonies will begin on July 4 in Tehran, and the late Ayatollah will be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, reports Reuters citing Iranian state media.

Khamenei’s funeral had previously been scheduled for early March but was postponed indefinitely. Officially, Iranian authorities attributed this to logistical difficulties and the need to prepare for the arrival of large numbers of people from across the country.

According to media reports, security concerns may also have been a factor in the postponement. Shortly before this, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that any new Iranian leader who continues the policy against Israel will be a target for elimination.

Ali Khamenei, 86, died on February 28, the very first day of a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran. He had led the Islamic Republic since 1989. Following the Ayatollah’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the post of Iran’s Supreme Leader; he was also injured during the strike on Tehran.
