ISW analysts have calculated.
Russia likely has only one operational "Oreshnik" medium-range ballistic missile in its arsenal. This is according to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), adding that Moscow is seeking to ramp up production of these weapons.
Analysts note that Putin issued a directive to accelerate the production of four additional “Oreshnik” cruise missiles following their first use against Dnipro in November 2024. Since then, Russia has launched two of them at Ukraine—at Lviv and Bila Tserkva. Another missile struck occupied territory in the Donetsk region. Given this, analysts note, Russia may have only one such missile remaining.
Experts cite sources from Dallas Analytics, an analysis firm linked to the Russian Ministry of Defense. These sources report that the manufacturers of the “Oreshnik” had to bypass quality assurance protocols to keep up with the pace demanded by Putin.
In particular, Dallas Analytics obtained confidential Russian documents that report a vulnerability in the Soviet-designed GU-503 aviation gyroscope. This effectively compromises the “Oreshnik” cruise missile’s precision guidance capabilities and causes the missile to deviate by tens of kilometers from its target.
