And “demonstrate genuine political will.”
Beijing is "urging" Moscow and Kyiv to resume negotiations to end the war, said China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sun Lei, according to The Moscow Times.
“We strongly urge an end to the conflict as soon as possible. We also urge the resumption of negotiations, the demonstration of genuine political will, and the taking of all necessary steps to address the root causes of this conflict through full and unconditional adherence to the principles of the UN Charter,” — Lei said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Chinese representative also noted that the military conflict is increasingly affecting civilian areas. “Innocent civilians are suffering as a result,” — Sun Lei emphasized. He added that China maintains an “objective and impartial” position on the Ukrainian issue, maintains contact with all parties, and “tirelessly” promotes peace talks. “Together with the international community, China is ready to continue playing a constructive role in promoting a political settlement of the crisis,” Lei concluded.
Over the past week, Vladimir Putin has twice stated his readiness to return to negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine. On June 23, he proposed resuming dialogue based on the Istanbul agreements, as well as taking into account the modalities discussed in Anchorage with U.S. President Donald Trump, and “the realities on the ground.” On June 28, in an interview with Kremlin correspondent Pavel Zarubin, Putin emphasized that he is ready to discuss with U.S. representatives “all the details, all the modalities” for resolving the conflict.
At the same time, Putin spoke about Kyiv’s proposal to refrain from striking each other’s territories and to limit military operations to the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, as well as the so-called “DPR” and “LPR.” Putin made it clear that he does not agree to this, since, in his words, such steps would give the Ukrainian army an advantage. He added that the main objective for Russian troops and for him personally is “the final liberation of Donbas and Novorossiya.”
