The U.S. president praised Madrid's generosity.
U.S. President Donald Trump changed his attitude toward Spain when he learned that the country had significantly increased its contribution to NATO. However, there are other issues as well.
This statement was made by a spokesperson for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, according to Reuters.
During the NATO summit in Ankara, the U.S. leader publicly called Spain a “terrible partner.”
Furthermore, Trump ordered an immediate halt to all trade with that country. The U.S. president announced his decision amid disputes over defense spending and the war with Iran.
However, a few hours later, the White House chief sharply softened his rhetoric regarding Spain.
“I did indeed have issues, and they remain. But Spain has completely changed its position today. Today, Spain has shown great generosity,” Trump said.
According to the U.S. leader, Madrid has complied with Washington’s request regarding “the payment of significant sums.”
Only now has a spokesperson for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez explained exactly what amounts are being discussed.
“Madrid has met NATO’s preliminary target of 2% of GDP for defense spending,” he emphasized.
Spanish authorities are comparing this dispute to a staged quarrel that was not actually based on any serious conflict.
Madrid also noted that, despite Trump’s high-profile statements, no economic consequences or reduction in investment in the country have been observed so far.
