Media: U.S. Sets Deadline For Iran

Trump is awaiting a public statement from Tehran.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding that Iran issue a public statement acknowledging that the Strait of Hormuz is open and committing to cease attacks on merchant ships.
This information was reported by the Axios news site.
This message was conveyed both directly and through regional intermediaries, three U.S. officials said.
Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz led to several rounds of retaliatory strikes and brought the fragile agreement to the brink of collapse, prompting Trump to announce this week that the truce had “ended.”
U.S. officials argue that Iran’s failure to fulfill such a straightforward commitment raises serious doubts about its willingness and ability to comply with a much more complex nuclear agreement.
“We want them to publicly state that they will stop firing on ships and to explicitly—or at least implicitly—acknowledge that they messed up. We’re working on that right now. We expect the Iranians to state… that all channels in the strait will be open and that passage through them will be free,” said a U.S. official.
A second U.S. official stated that Iran’s refusal would result in severe consequences. “If (tomorrow—Saturday, July 11. — Ed.) they do not take that position, it will not be the best day for them,” the official said.
One of the officials emphasized that Trump had given U.S. negotiators leeway and time to reach a nuclear deal with Iran, “but not too much.”
He added that contingency plans are being developed in case a nuclear deal is not reached.
As is well known, the United States struck dozens of targets in Iran on Tuesday and Wednesday in response to a series of Iranian attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran retaliated with attacks on U.S. facilities in the Middle East.
