This appointment could affect the upcoming U.S. elections.
Following the death of Lindsey Graham, there is already talk in the U.S. about his successor. Unexpectedly, the senator’s sister has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the vacant seat.
This was reported by Charter97.org, citing a post by U.S. President Donald Trump on the social media platform Truth Social.
According to Trump, he recommended that South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appoint Darlene Graham as a temporary senator.
“I recommended to Governor Henry McMaster that he appoint Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darlene, as interim senator from the great state of South Carolina. This would be a magnificent tribute to Lindsey, who loved her very much!” wrote the U.S. president.
Under South Carolina law, the governor has the authority to independently appoint a temporary senator to serve until new elections are held.
The appointment carries significant political weight, as the interim senator will become the Republican Party’s candidate in the next election.
It is possible that Trump’s nomination of Darlin Graham is intended to avoid favoring any of the other potential candidates.
