Street Lighting Has Been Shut Down In Crimea Due To The Energy Crisis

A state of emergency has been declared on the peninsula.

Sergey Aksyonov , the Moscow-appointed “head” of annexed Crimea , announced that street lighting will be reduced in the peninsula’s municipalities. On his Telegram channel, he clarified that this measure will be implemented in all municipalities in the region, but promised that the restrictions would not affect residential buildings. Aksenov also announced the creation of a schedule for generator deliveries—supplies will begin with the communities that have been without electricity the longest. “There are communities that have been without electricity for more than 12 days,” he noted.

The decision to reduce street lighting was made against the backdrop of a protracted energy crisis on the peninsula. On June 26, a state of emergency was declared in Crimea due to a fuel shortage. On July 6, “Krymenergo” reported that the entire peninsula was left without electricity as a result of Ukrainian attacks on the power grid. Soon after, the local water utility announced disruptions to the water supply. Amid the blackout and water problems, residents faced food shortages in stores.

Ukrainian authorities had previously announced their intention to isolate Crimea and turn it “into an island”: The Ukrainian Armed Forces, using drones, established control over traffic on the R-280 “Novorossiya” highway, which connects the Rostov Region to the peninsula through occupied territories, and intensified strikes on energy, military, and transportation infrastructure. In addition, the Ukrainian military launched a campaign against Russian ships heading for Crimea.

According to the commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi (“Madyar”), by July 13, 105 vessels attempting to deliver cargo, including fuel, to the peninsula had been struck in the Sea of Azov over the course of eight days. Also on Monday, for the second time in two days, the “Crimea” power transmission substation (PP-2 “Crimea”)—a strategic facility of the Kuban–Crimea energy bridge, which supplies power from the Krasnodar Krai—was struck.
