Germany Wants To Block Far-Right Groups' Access To State Secrets

Authorities are concerned about "Alternative for Germany's" ties to Moscow.

Against the backdrop of the rising popularity of the “Alternative for Germany” party, which could win a majority in parliamentary elections in one of the country’s eastern regions, German security agencies are developing a plan to help ensure the protection of confidential information. According to Bloomberg, it is proposed that certain data be deleted or classified. This is intended to prevent access to it by government agencies that may be under the control of this party.

If this party wins the election in early September, it will form the government of the eastern region—the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In that case, the interior minister from this party would, among other things, gain access to all intelligence operations in the region and, to some extent, throughout the country. The fact is that the states share investigative data with one another and with the federal government in Berlin.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called this a risk and stated that officials are exploring ways to prevent “Alternative for Germany” from accessing certain information due to the party’s ties to Moscow. The publication added that some party representatives hold a “pro-Russian” stance, and several of its members have made repeated trips to Russia. This is stated in the German counterintelligence agency’s annual report for 2025.

“We cannot ignore the close ties between ‘Alternative for Germany’ and Putin. There are also rumors of funding from Russia,” Pistorius said.

Stefan Brandner, a member of the Bundestag from the “Alternative for Germany” party and the party’s deputy leader, called the accusation of mishandling state secrets “absurd,” stating that “Alternative for Germany” complies with laws and regulations.

A report by German counterintelligence states that the “Alternative for Germany” party is united around an ethno-nationalist ideology that advocates the mass deportation of foreigners

This far-right movement is promoting plans to create groups that will begin deporting non-German citizens from the country. They also plan to reform the education system to “eradicate left-wing ideological indoctrination” and carry out a “purge” of civil servants who do not share the party’s views. The party has also already promised to reorganize the state internal intelligence service in Saxony-Anhalt if they win the election.
