German Defense Minister: The War In Ukraine Is Entering A Decisive Phase

Now, more than ever, the allies must step up their support for Kyiv.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius believes that the war waged by the aggressor state, the Russian Federation, against Ukraine is entering “what may be a decisive phase,” and that now, more than ever, the allies must maintain or even strengthen their support for Kyiv. He made these remarks in an interview Der Spiegel , published on July 2.

He was asked about preparations for a new aid package for Ukraine, which is scheduled to be discussed at the NATO summit. This involves a €40 billion fund to support Ukraine, of which Germany is prepared to contribute approximately €12 billion.

He emphasized that Ukraine needs stable funding to produce weapons and continue its defense against Russian aggression. According to him, this is not just about short-term aid, but also about the long-term shared responsibility of NATO partners.

“The war in Ukraine may have entered a decisive phase, and we must seize this moment. [...] I consider it our shared responsibility not to let up on our efforts or scale back our support,” Pistorius said.
