Lukashenko's Friend Canceled The Election

Ortega decided to definitively seize power in Nicaragua.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, who has been in power without interruption since 2007, announced that the country will no longer hold presidential elections.

Delivering a speech marking the anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution, which overthrew the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza, Ortega stated that there “will be no more” elections, as they allegedly provide an opportunity for various forces to “seize power and the government,” reports Reuters.

According to him, the days when U.S.-backed Somoza supporters could count on a return to power will not be repeated.

The country’s last elections took place in 2021, after which the authorities launched a large-scale crackdown: Ortega’s political opponents, as well as businesspeople who supported the opposition, were detained. In 2025, Ortega initiated constitutional amendments, extending the presidential term to six years and granting his wife Rosario Murillo the status of “co-president.”

It should be noted that Lukashenko congratulated Ortega on Sandinista Revolution Day.

“The principles of equality, social justice, and the right to self-determination, which ensure a peaceful life for the Nicaraguan people, are close to and understood by Belarus, where the individual and his or her well-being are always at the center of state policy,” the dictator stated.

Lukashenko himself has expressed admiration for Daniel Ortega.
