Warsaw To Hold A Farewell Ceremony For Writer Svetlana Kurs

On Sunday at St. Alexander's Church.

A memorial service for the writer Svetlana Kurs will be held on Sunday, July 26, in Warsaw.

The memorial Mass will begin at 2:00 p.m. at St. Alexander’s Church on Three Crosses Square.

A civil memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Museum of Free Belarus at 11 Foksal Street.

The family asks that the number of flowers be kept to a minimum.

As a reminder, Svetlana Kurs passed away on July 20. She was 54 years old; the Belarusian woman had been battling cancer. She had been living in Poland for the past few years.

Svetlana Kurs was born in the village of Zagale in the Lyuban District of the Minsk Region. A journalist, writer, and translator, she graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Belarusian State University in 1994. She worked for independent Belarusian media outlets and contributed to the magazines ARCHE and “Dzeyaslów.”

In 2013, she was a fellow at the Villa Aurora and Thomas Mann House literary residency in Germany. In 2018, she won the “Volnaye Slova” creative competition organized by the Belarusian Association of Journalists.

She is the author of the books *Shlyakh drobnay svolachy* (2008) and *Pa shto idzesh, voucha?* (2020), which has been translated into several European languages.

In 2021, she was awarded the Jerzy Gedroyc Prize for her book *Pa shto idzesh, voucha?*.
