Trump Outlined A Condition For A Nuclear Deal With Saudi Arabia

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that cooperation between Washington and Riyadh in the field of peaceful nuclear energy will depend on Saudi Arabia joining the “Abraham Accords” with Israel, according to Politico.

“[The deal] will be approved, but its implementation depends entirely on Saudi Arabia joining the ‘Abraham Accords,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported this initiative, noting that Saudi Arabia’s accession to the accords would be a “historic step toward peace in the Middle East.”

The deal between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia provides for the export of nuclear technology for civilian purposes without uranium enrichment. However, according to media reports, the document does not specify any obligations on the part of Saudi Arabia to renounce uranium enrichment or to agree to IAEA inspections. This has raised concerns in the U.S. Congress.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, for his part, assured that the cooperation agreement between Washington and Riyadh in the field of peaceful nuclear energy complies with nuclear safety standards. According to Politico, the deal is expected to bring American companies billions of dollars.

The “Abraham Accords” were signed in 2020 by Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco in 2020, with the U.S. acting as a mediator to establish diplomatic relations. Sudan and Kazakhstan later joined the agreement. The name of the document refers to Abraham, who is considered the forefather of the Jewish people and several Arab tribes.
