Today Is Belarus Independence Day

On July 27, the Supreme Council adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty.

On July 27, 1990, the Supreme Council of Belarus adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty. This document, which is of great importance to our country, marked the first official step toward Belarus’s independence.

The Declaration on State Sovereignty proclaimed “the full state sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus as the supremacy, autonomy, and completeness of the republic’s state power within its territorial boundaries, the validity of its laws, and the Republic’s independence in foreign relations.”

It was on this very day that the new history of our country began.

July 27 was declared Belarus’s Independence Day.

On August 25, 1991, the Declaration on State Sovereignty was granted the status of a constitutional law, on the basis of which amendments and additions were made to the 1978 Constitution. The new Constitution of the Republic of Belarus was adopted on March 15, 1994.

The authorities abolished the holiday following the 1996 “referendum”, in which Lukashenko was granted unlimited powers. Independence Day began to be celebrated on July 3, the anniversary of Minsk’s liberation from Nazi invaders. The democratic community, as before, celebrates Independence Day on July 27.
