A Belarusian Woman Received Nearly $3.5 Billion In Her Bank Account

A woman from Belarus shared on Threads an unusual story about her interaction with her bank: she received a notification that an amount measured in billions had been credited to her account.

According to her, the account of a sole proprietorship—which she was planning to close due to a zero balance—suddenly received 9 billion 990 million rubles—that’s about 3.46 billion dollars at the National Bank’s exchange rate as of July 29.

“I was completely stunned today,” she said, describing her reaction, adding that her first impulse was to go to the bank to explain herself: she doesn’t want anyone else’s money, but she’d like to avoid questions from the relevant authorities after such a transaction. She concluded her post with a rhetorical question for the bank: “‘Alfa Bank,’ what are you doing? Why are you scaring people like this, and what’s going on over there?”

The bank itself responded promptly to the screenshot of the notification showing the fantastical amount—a spokesperson for the organization admitted in the comments that they were also surprised and asked the woman to contact customer support via chat to sort out the situation.
