The U.S. president issued a harsh statement following the attack on a U.S. base in Jordan.
U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Iran with a harsh response after Tehran launched a missile strike against U.S. military personnel in the Middle East. “We’ll beat the hell out of them. We’ll strike them hard,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. At the same time, speaking about the prospects for a diplomatic settlement, he emphasized that Washington does not intend to completely abandon negotiations with Tehran. In addition, Trump reported that the U.S. nighttime strikes against Iranian-backed armed groups in Iraq had been coordinated in advance with the Iraqi government.
As previously reported by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on social media platform X, forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched several ballistic missiles from Iranian territory on the night of July 29 in an attempt to launch a surprise attack on U.S. troops. According to CENTCOM, all the missiles were successfully intercepted. Axios later reported, citing a senior U.S. official, that the target of the attack was a U.S. base in Jordan. This is Iran’s first missile strike on a U.S. military facility in the region since Trump ordered a suspension of strikes on Iranian territory.
On July 24, Axios reported that the U.S. president had ordered a temporary halt to attacks on Iranian targets. Prior to that, for 13 days, he had approved strike plans on a daily basis, which the military carried out within a few hours. However, after receiving the next plan, Trump did not authorize its execution, stating that he considered reaching an agreement with Tehran to be a more sensible strategy. At the same time, he did not rule out resuming the strikes, going as far as to threaten the “complete destruction of everything Iran has.”
Earlier, on June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, but shortly thereafter, the exchange of strikes resumed.
