A Drone Attacked An American Gas Tanker In An Egyptian Port

A drone struck a gas tanker owned by an American company in the Egyptian Mediterranean port of Damietta.

What is known about the attack

The British maritime security firm Ambrey reported that a drone struck the tanker. Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum confirmed a fire at the port but did not mention a drone attack or specify the cause of the incident.

According to three sources familiar with trading operations, the drone struck the floating storage unit Energos Winter, after which the fire spread to another vessel, the Gaslog Salem. Two independent security sources assessed the likely cause of the explosion as a drone strike.

Vanguard, a British maritime risk management group, reported that the Energos Winter was struck by an unidentified projectile on the ship’s starboard side, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished.

It is not yet known who is responsible for the incident, which occurred shortly after Iran’s missile attack on U.S. troops in Jordan, as well as U.S. and Saudi Arabian strikes against pro-Iranian groups in Iraq.

President Trump threatened to retaliate against Iran, while Yemen’s Houthi group announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia—a conflict that, the publication suggests, has been spreading more widely than at any time since the U.S. and Israel began bombing Iran in February.

Energos Winter is a floating storage and regasification unit with a capacity of 138,250 cubic meters. The vessel is owned by the American company Energos Infrastructure, while technical, safety, and commercial operations are handled by another American company, Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
